How to roof chimney flashing.

Hammer 2 roofing nails into the flashing and roof. Ensure the chimney s base flashing is in proper order secured to the roof as the manufacturer or mason recommends beneath the shingles. With the primary flashing and counter flashing connected this differential movement could potentially allow strain to develop in the mortar or pull at fasteners in the roofing assembly. Slide the prebent and soldered chimney saddle into place behind the chimney.

Apply roofing cement to the joint between the flashing and brick. Apply a generous amount of roofing cement behind the flashing. Along the edges or closer if necessary to flatten the metal. Cap flashing mortared or caulked into the chimney laps over the top edges of the other flashings to prevent water from running behind them.

If you were not provided with base flashing you can install step flashing up the side of the chimney. Place the step flashing over the caulk and onto the chimney. Seal the seam between the cap and step flashing with urethane roofing cement or silicone caulking compound as shown at right. Secure a shingle over the corner flashing using a hammer and roofing nail.

Seal the sides of the chimney with prebent pieces of step flashing under each course of shingles photos 4 and 5. Galvanized roofing nails about every 6 in. The roof deck and the brick chimney are physically separated by the chase. Renew flashing seals by chipping out the old mortar and caulking along the edges of the flashing.

They re applied under roofing felt along eaves and over roofing felt along rakes. Use special masonry caulk to seal the joints between the flashing and the chimney. Place a small drop of caulk where the roof and chimney meet at the chimney corner. Cover any exposed nail or screw heads with roofing cement.

Place a second piece of 8 inch 20 3 cm flashing against the chimney. It s typically made of thin pieces of impenetrable material which inhibits water leaking around the chimney preserving the building from moisture and mold issues.
